The next day, Denique watched Harchiel closely, keeping his eye on the clock and doing an expert job of snatching the keys from the wire that Harchiel had hooked into his belt. He also kept his eyes on the sun, since he knew sunlight was his way out. He had already examined the boards in the windows, and knew they were wobbly and cracked in some places. He also noticed that the planks in the walls were exposed since they didn’t have any drywall, or insulation, only studs standing or crisscrossed in some places. This gave him an idea. With hurried movements, he pulled off his shoes and climbed up as far as he could. Luckily, he managed to touch the roof and noticed that the thatching was so old it had grown weak and the vegetation so dry and old a high wind could have blown it off. This was great. The house was a cracker box built of cheap materials, and built in a hurry. It was also very old. This was good news to Denique. It looked like things were definitely going his way.

Now, how was he going to get Harchiel into the cage?

Denique must have fallen asleep because the next thing he knew Harchiel was slamming into the room with his lunch. He quickly noticed that the sun hadn’t traveled far enough along the floor to reach the cage yet, but it didn’t matter. He was anxious and tired of waiting, so he decided that now was the time to stage his little tantrum. When Harchiel sat his tray down, Denique looked at it, noticing that it was the same slop he’d been eating since day one. He picked the tray up slowly, and then in a fit of rage he took the tray and threw it across the room. “I’m not eating another bite of this slop!”

Harchiel whirled around. “You will eat…”

Before Harchiel could get to him, Denique yelled out, “Oh, my God, what’s that?”

“What?” Harchiel bellowed out as he turned to see what Denique was looking at.

“That…that…I think it’s a…” he began, pointing at the cage.

“Where?” Harchiel said, walking closer to the cage.

Just then Denique got up, hurried over to the cage, and pointed. “Over there! In the corner!”

Harchiel hurried into the cage and looked down, still not seeing anything.

Just then Denique grabbed the door and clanged it shut.

Hearing the key in the lock, Harchiel whirled around, and grabbed the door, pushed on it, but it was too late. It was locked.

While the ugly giant was shaking the bars, Denique backed away, and dangled the keys from his hand, and said, “Need these?”

“You bastard!” Harchiel yelled, reaching through the bars. “Give those back, now!”

“Say please,” Denique said, taunting him.

“When I get out of here, I’m going to kill you, so help me,” he yelled, reaching out and grabbing at the keys.

Just then Denique quickly pulled the keys back out of his reach. “You don’t really think that’s going to happen, do
